Chip Conley

Chip is the founder, executive chairman, and chief creative officer of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, one of the U.S.'s most innovative hospitality companies. He first began its collection of boutique hotels in 1987 at the age of 26, with no industry experience and armed solely with a BA and MBA from Stanford University. In 2011, after leading Joie de Vivre's expansion to 30+ properties in California, Chip transitioned from CEO to executive chairman.

Chip's successful and renowned management techniques are best captured in his books, Peak: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow, The Rebel Rules: Daring to Be Yourself in Business, Marketing that Matters: 10 Practices to Profit Your Business and Change the World, and the forthcoming Emotional Equations: Simple Truths for Creating Happiness and Success. Chip has been featured in Time, Fast Company, Fortune, People, and the Wall Street Journal, and honored by the San Francisco Business Times as the “Most Innovative CEO” in the Bay Area. A committed philanthropist, he served on the board of Glide Memorial Church for nearly a decade and currently serves on the Burning Man Project and Esalen Institute boards. He created the San Francisco Hotel Hero Awards and founded the city’s Annual Celebrity Pool Toss event, which has raised millions for inner-city youth programs that now thrive in the troubled neighborhood where he launched his first hotel. In addition to his Stanford degrees, Chip was awarded with an honorary doctorate in psychology by The Saybrook Graduate School.
